Welcome to this unbiased review of the Optimum Nutrition (ON) Platinum HydroBuilder protein powder. Muscle building supplements have never been more popular and the whey protein offered by Optimum Nutrition is among the most highly rated.
When I say “highly rated” I am not talking about ON’s marketing material, but actual customer reviews. Indeed, this is an excellent protein powder.
This review will do its best to cover the nutritional profile of the ON Platinum Hydrobuilder protein supplement as well as its taste, purchase options, and other relevant elements of the product.
So, without further adieu, let’s talk about the details of the ON Platinum Hydrobuilder product, and the company that produces it.
About ON Platinum HydroBuilder
Optimum Nutrition is a subsidiary of Glanbia, a Kilkenny, Ireland-based company. Founded in 1986, Optimum Nutrition produces not just multiple protein powders but nutritional bars, ready-to-drink shakes and energy formulas, pre-, post- and inter-bodybuilding supplements as well as vitamin and mineral supplements.
It is noteworthy that ON also produces all their products in state-of-the-art, cGMP-compliant and registered facilities. “GMP” means, “Good Manufacturing Practices” and is an indicator of high quality not only for the raw materials their nutritional supplements are made from but
Optimum Nutrition HydroBuilder is a new protein supplement offering by the company. They are the makers of the well received Gold Standard 100 Whey, Serious Mass, Hydro Whey, and their Casein protein supplement derivative as well.
This product is positioned as its “post-workout” protein while the Platinum Hydrowhey is designed to be an early morning protein. The gold standard 100% casein protein is meant to be taken before bed.
Let’s talk now about the product’s nuances.
How does it taste? It is, like the other Optimum Nutrition protein powders, excellent. Just with one vendor on Amazon.com, it has 139 customer reviews. On another popular site, the ON Platinum Hydro Builder product has 534 reviews, many of which compliment its taste. With social media, over 2,000 have recommended it as well, and this is just a small sampling and by no means comprehensive.
The flavors Platinum HydroBuilder comes in are vanilla bean, chocolate shake (I love this one), velocity vanilla, cookies & cream, chocolate peanut butter, turbo chocolate and strawberry shake. While the flavor options are not as large as other protein powders on the market, this is adequate for most.
Also, it should be point out that not all the weight options have all the flavors available.
The options for sale are 1.75 pounds, 2.29 pounds, 3. 5 pounds, and 4.59 pounds as you can see to your left.
What about the core nutrition?
This protein powder is a powerhouse. Here are the core nutritional facts the ON Platinum Hydrobuilder has:
- 180 calories per serving with only 25 of those calories coming from fat
- 30 grams of protein per serving
- 5 grams of micronized creatine (this is not common for most protein powders to add creatine)
- 2.5 grams of betaine added
- 13.5 grams of core essential amino acids, the building blocks of protein
- Micronized BCAAs (branched chain amino acids) as well as L-Glutamine, argine and citruline.
It has a unique protein blend including hydrolyzed whey protein isolate (“hydrolyzed” essentially means pre-digested — it helps with digestin), micellar casein, which allows a long, sustained protein release for maximum muscle-building effect, hydrolyzed whey protein, whey protein concentrate, hydrolyzed egg albumen (an egg protein). The other ingredients are fairly standard, but one ingredient that caught my attention is that it has turmeric extract added. Turmeric is a nutritional powerhouse and one of the rare herbs or foods that qualifies as a super food.
Yes, this is a quality protein, it appears, nutritionally speaking. Most will buy this due to its muscle enhancing properties and it appears ready made for that purpose.
NOTE: Be advised it contains milk, egg and lecithin ingredients.

I know many of you scrolling through reviews are looking for a few key things: 1. Will this make me look better naked 2. will this improve me from the inside out and 3. DOES IT TASTE GOOD? well look no further, the review is finally here that will answer all these questions and more. Platinum Hydro Builder is an absolutely amazing product.
I’ve been on it for a month and I can absolutely guarantee you that I’ve put on more muscle [and fat- but that’s granted due to my weight gain diet. it’s very minimal too, still have a six pack and a V] than I’ve ever put on in my entire life. period. It WORKS if you’re trying to build muscle, and it’s not another product that’s all hyped up. (like nitro core-my god.) Will it improve you from the inside out? hell yeah it will. the betapower betaine and the punch of digestive enzymes have been amazing to me digestion-wise.. I’ll leave it at that haha.
And last but not least- the taste. Okay, I can’t vouch for strawberry since I have not tried it, but let me tell you I’ve tried vanilla and chocolate and they’re the absolute most flawless, richest, most dreamiest protein powders that I’ve ever had. period. Seriously. both vanilla and chocolate are absolutely perfect.
And here’s the kick: since it’s a post workout powder I’ve NEVER EVEN TRIED IT IN MILK. ONLY WATER. you heard it. I swear it tastes even better than Gaspari Myofusion, MusclePharm Combat powder<-even cookies and cream!, BSA SYNTHA-6, and gold standard. I can emphasize how absolutely delicious both of these flavors are. if you were to pick one of the two? go with chocolate.
The chocolate I save for my special hell workouts (leg and circuit days). because it tastes so damn good. but if you’re hooked on vanilla protein powders, don’t hesitate to grab some vanilla. it’s just as amazing. I recommend this to all of my friends.
Are there any negatives regarding this product? Most protein powders give flatulence until one’s body adapts to it. This could be the case with this product. It’s not bad, though and certainly not anywhere near as the gastro-intestinal effect some other protein powders give.
Also, it has been recommended that one take this platinum hydrobuilder product with milk and not water. The milk made it a lot thicker, which some don’t like.
How Much Does ON Platinum HydroBuilder Cost?
I’ve looked around the Internet as well as at offline or brick-and-mortar supplement shops and Amazon.com has the best prices, but you are free to choose. Plus, Amazon has a great guarantee, too. (You can read about it here.)
The options for sale at Amazon are below:
Where Can I Buy it?
Again, you can buy it from Amazon.com here but you are free to choose. Is it the best whey protein powder on the market? That is debatable, of course, for there are some very fine whey protein products on the market today.
That said, this is a superb protein supplement produced by a leader in the industry. I hope this review of the Optimum Nutrition Platinum Hydrobuilder whey protein powder has been helpful to you.
