Rating: 5 (out of 5)

Welcome to this review of the NOW Foods Psyllium Husk colon cleanse product. The health of the gastro-intestinal system is largely off the radar of almost all except for the truly health conscious. The intestinal system is literally the “sewage plant” of the body and as such needs to be kept clean. Naturopathic, homeopathic and even allopathic (Western medicine) trained doctors and healthcare professionals all agree that many diseases actually have their origins in a diseased or challenged colon or intestinal tract.

Many follow a Western diet and as such eat too many processed, sugary, and meat foods. This is a real problem for the entire body let alone the gastro-intestinal wall. A good colon cleansing product should be considered by any who want better bowel movements and/or to clean their intestinal walls.

Product Quality

As you know, product quality is something I always start my reviews. NOW Foods is one of the stellar companies in the supplement industry that by all appearances seeks to produce high quality, pristine products. In fact, NOW Foods co-founder was one of those who helped to define manufacturing standards.

Well before the U.S. FDA mandated GMP-compliance in 2009 when it was passed into law, NOW gmp1Foods voluntarily adhered to GMP standards. While not completely comprehensive, check out the auditing checklist that companies have to work with to get yearly GMP compliance.

The irony here is that while the FDA mandated GMP compliance, they don’t enforce it and that might be a good thing as the FDA has a reputation for aggressiveness. So, companies voluntarily submit to mainly four organizations that perform GMP auditing. They are:

  • NNFA (Nаtіоnаl Nutritional Food Aѕѕосіаtіоn)
  • NPA (Natural Products Association)
  • USP (United States Pharmacopeia)
  • NSF International (National Sanitation Foundation)

NOW Foods has GMP compliance with NPA and NSF International. So, you can be assured you are getting a quality product.

NOW Foods Psyllium Husk Features & Benefits

Let’s now talk about the specifics of psyllium husks (pronounced “sill-e-um”). Psyllium seed husks (plantago asiatic) are actually from the plant Plantago ovata. It is a natural vegetable laxative. Even name brand supplements like Metamucil are largely comprised of psyllium seed husks. Its seeds are actually indigestible so when combined with water, they swell up as they are hygroscopic where they can retain water or liquid molecules. This makes them highly beneficial to the intestinal tract as they bowl of psyllium huskshelp to “clump” or draw to them fecal matter. Psyllium husks have a compounding factor that allows it to help expel much more matter than it is comprised of.

Psyllium husks work and work very well. This particular product has no other ingredients — just psyllium seed husks. Some psyllium is much more ground than other options out there but it’s basically the same.

That said, here is this particular product’s nutritional profile:

  • Two level tablespoons is 10 grams
  • Calories — 38
  • Carbohydrates — 9
  • Dietary fiber — 7.4 grams
  • Calcium — 30 mg
  • Iron — 180 mcg
  • Psyllium husks — 10 grams

This particular product comes in four available canister size options. They are:

  • 12 ounces (340 grams)
  • 1 pound (454 grams)
  • 2 pound (680 grams)
  • 10 pound (4.54 kilograms)

Side Effects of NOW Foods Psyllium Husk

Psyllium seed or husks is very safe to use. Basically it is a food. A non-tasty food but a food nonetheless. It is bland and can be for some very unpleasant to drink IF one adds too much to the drink concoction. But in terms of health side effects, this product is perfectly safe to supplement with in one’s health regime.

This product is very affordable. As it is available in different sizes, I broke the price range down for you based on the size. The price ranges are:

NOW Foods offers a fantastic guarantee and wants by all appearances their customers to be happy. That said, like all vendors virtually, they defer to the retailer from whom you buy. Due to one-year guaranteethat, I recommend buying from Amazon, if you want to test this product out. Why? Because they have a great guarantee, great prices due to so many retail vendors competing head to head and because Amazon has great customer service having won the ForeSee Experience Index award for best customer service an astonishing nine years in a row.

Customer Reviews of NOW Foods Psyllium Husk Product

This product has no shortage of customer reviews and testimonials on Amazon. It has 195 reviews just for this particular option scoring an average of 4.6 out of 5.00. Anything 4.0 or above tends to be good, but 4.5 is excellent. Customer reviews are important to include in reviews, I think, as they show real-world comments from real people while advertising copy and ads from a company are one-sided highlighting only the positives of a product and never its negatives. Reviews do that. Without further adieu, here are some real-world reviews.

Thіѕ рrоduсt іѕ bаѕісаllу tаѕtеlеѕѕ аnd еаѕу tо еаt. I even kіnd оf like thе tеxturе. If уоu mіx it wіth wаtеr аnd weight іt wіll turn into a kind of gel. It dоеѕ hаvе ѕоmе tіnу lіttlе lеаvеѕ оr ѕоmеthіng in іt, but thаt ѕееmѕ hаrmlеѕѕ. It works vеrу well. Keeps уоu rеgulаr. It rеаllу еаѕеѕ IBS or hеmmоrhоіdѕ. Mаkеѕ уоu fееl full. Suрроѕеdlу hеlрѕ cut сhоlеѕtеrоl аnd bооѕt уоur immunity. Reduces уоur rіѕk оf саnсеr.

The bеѕt раrt аbоut the whole psyllium huѕk is thаt it ѕееmѕ ѕаfеr thаn the powdered ѕtuff. I’vе gotten ѕоmе rеаllу bаd сrаmрѕ аnd rосk hаrd dооdіе from thе роwdеrеd ѕtuff. Yоu have tо bе rеаllу саrеful tо get LOTS оf wаtеr wіth thаt stuff. Thе whоlе huѕk dоеѕn’t ѕееm tо саuѕе thаt problem fоr some rеаѕоn. Evеn іf I take a lоt larger dоѕе.

I аm able tо drіnk оr еаt stuff ѕіmіlаr tо tree bark tо get fiber іn mу dіеt…mу wіfе аnd 3 уеаr оld are a lіttlе mоrе fіnісkу. I mіx this with mу morning рrоtеіn ѕhаkе and it’s great. Yоu do hаvе to drіnk іt fаіrlу quickly because іt absorbs a lоt оf liquid аnd floats tо thе tор сrеаtіng a thісk lауеr ѕіmіlаr in соnѕіѕtеnсу tо tаріоса. Fоr mу wіfе and сhіld, I slip a scoop of thіѕ іntо thе fаmіlу dinner. It mіxеѕ grеаt іn hamburger mеаt (hаmburgеrѕ, mеаtlоаf, etc) аnd саn also bе cooked іn the rісе сооkеr wіth rісе аnd раѕtа. I’vе also mаdе brоwnіеѕ, сооkіеѕ and even oatmeal with this in іt….аnd thеу never саught оn. Next, I рlаn tо ѕоаk some іn milk and try іt іn a bаtсh оf hоmе mаdе ice cream.

Thе husks dо gіvе a bіt оf a “brоwn rісе flavor” tо fооd аnd drіnk that dоеѕn’t hаvе еnоugh flаvоr to mаѕk іt. I реrѕоnаllу like thе flavor, and асtuаllу lіkе mіxіng it іn plain lоw fаt milk fоr a nice еnd-оf-dау adult bеvеrаgе wіth a little Bаіlеу’ѕ or Kahlua.

The 10 роund bаg іѕ a little intimidating, but іt is VERY easy to kеер a small container іn thе pantry, whіlе thе rеѕt ѕtауѕ ѕеаlеd іn thе rе-ѕеаlаblе original bаg fоr rеfіllѕ.

It Works. Period.

This product is one I’ve been using for at least 5 to 10 years. I’ve been using psyllium husks for probably 20+ years. Psyllium works very well when added to juice (I take mine in orange juice or some kind of fruit juice), mix well, then drink. Be advised it is NOT a recreational drink — it’s a tonic, if you will, whose purpose is to bring about good, large bowel movements.

  • All NOW Foods products are made in a GMP-compliant facility
  • Psyllium husks or seeds works very well
  • It’s inexpensive
  • It’s easy to use
  • It produces good bowel movements
  • It is non-addictive
  • It is easy on the stomach and intestinal tract

  • When too much is put into a drink, it turns into a thick, mucilaginous mixture that is very difficult to drink
  • It’s very bland tasting
  • It is non-organic unless otherwise stated

Where Can I Buy NOW Foods Psyllium Husk?

NOW Foods Psyllium HuskYou can buy it here, but you are free to choose. So, what’s the verdict? This is another high quality product that produces real results for consumers. Psyllium husks work and work well. They are not a very carefully designed colon cleanse product the like of Colonix or Blessed Herbs herbal colon cleansing product, but for improving daily fiber and to create goodly sized movements that help clean out the intestinal walls, this product works very well. I give it a 5.00 out of 5.00. hope this review of the NOW Foods Psyllium Husks colon cleanse supplement has been useful.
