Review of BPI Sports Whey HD

Is the BPI Sports Whey HD protein the best whey protein powder on the market today? Does it work? Is it a quality muscle building supplement?

Rating: 4 (out of 5)

Welcome to this review of the BPI Whey HD protein powder. Headquarted in Hollywood, Florida, BPI Sports says they’re the fastest growing sports nutrition supplement company in the world. Their whey protein powder is currently as of this writing the twentieth-sixth most popular supplement on (Incidentally, you can read more supplement reviews on this site by going here.)

That aside, you want a quality protein powder that actually helps synthesize muscle. You want a protein powder to actually taste good, too. You want a whey protein powder that is complementary to your diet and supplement regime. And lastly, you don’t want to break the bank either. BPI Sports believes they can meet that order. Can they?

That’s what this review is all about. Let’s get into this supplement product now.

Product Features & Benefits of BPI Whey HD

First, let’s talk about the company that makes the Whey-HD product. BPI Sports is popular. They have been nominated for the following product categories of 2014. They are:

  • Brand of the Year
  • Best Tasting Protein of the Year- Whey-HD™
  • Most Innovative brand of the Year
  • Protein Powder of the year – Whey-HD™
  • Pre-workout Supplement of the Year – 1.M.R Vortex™
  • Amino/Recovery Supplement of the Year – Best BCAA™
  • Creatine Supplement of the Year- BUILD-HD™
  • Fat Loss supplement of the Year – B4™

As you can see, BPI Sports is beginning to make a name for itself, but what about product purity? As you may know, fraud in the supplement industry used to be utterly systemic. Strides have bcGMP Logo Complianceeen made and one of those efforts has been made by the U.S. government mandating NSF for Sport GMP certification.

What is that? GMP stands for “good manufacturing practices” and is sometimes represented as “cGMP” with the “c” meaning current.

What this means in terms of purity of construction, a GMP registered facility is a prime mark of product quality. It means that a company’s in-house mаnufасturіng ореrаtіоn hаѕ been rеgіѕtеrеd undеr the NSF Intеrnаtіоnаl, The Publіс Hеаlth аnd Sаfеtу Company, Gооd Mаnufасturіng Practices (GMP) Program. Companies who complete this audit from NSF International certifies that the raw nutrients are free of banned substances but also that its manufacturing, bottling, and cleanliness of the facility are established. Moreover, employee training and specific procedures are in place to ensure strict standards of quality control are in place. This is also an ongoing audit and is not a one-time thing.

BPI Sports doesn’t have this GMP certification. That is a big negative for them. Does that mean they are producing inferior products? No, not necessarily — and this is important to mention. In the increasingly competitive world of fitness and bodybuilding supplements, any edge a company can legitimate advertise in its marketing copy is an advantage. Customers want to know their products are pure and made with strict standards. You can read more info at the FDA site on it here, too.

Let’s now talk about the product’s unique qualities including its nutrient and ingredient profile, its flavor options, available size options and its core competencies.

Let’s take this whey protein’s core competencies first. This product when supplemented with diet will, BPI Sports, says:

  • It rapidly digests into its core amino acid constituents
  • Offers 25 grams of protein per serving, a core nutrient needed for muscle repair and growth
  • Fuels muscle synthesis and growth
  • Serves as the bedrock of one’s supplement regime for muscle growth

You can’t review a whey protein supplement without talking about its ingredients and nutrient profile.

There are a few notable nutrients to discuss. First, the notable omission of micellar casein protein is worth mentioning. Casein protein is meant to be consumed before bed so one is getting a slow-release of protein into the system for optimal usage. Dr. Jim Stoppani says the ideal protein mix needs to have not only when protein isolate, milk protein isolate but also micellar casein for a full bodied approach for muscle synthesis and recovery.

It also has silica, a binder agent no doubt. Silica is basically sand particles. Also sucralose. Splenda is the more common name for sucralose. It is a sweetner. Some scientists report noxious effects attributable to Splenda. Xanthan gum is a thickening and binding agent. Carrageenan gum is also a binding agent. According to Prevention magazine, carrageenan causes inflammation and has no nutritional value. Plus, it has been shown in studies to cause gastrointestinal disease in lab animals, including colon cancer, lesions, and ulcerative colitis.

Here is the core nutrition profile for BPI’s whey protein product per serving:

  • 126 calories
  • 3 grams of carbohydrates
  • 25 grams of protein

What about flavors? The flavors are a little untraditional. They don’t offer straight chocolate, vanilla or strawberry the way the vast majority of whey protein manufacturers do. The flavors are:

  • Banana Marshallow Pie
  • Chocolate Cookie
  • Milk & Cookies
  • Vanilla Caramel (not available in the 5 servings option)

The size options are:

  • 2.15 pounds (25 servings)
  • 4.98 pounds (58 servings)

Side Effects of BPI Whey HD

There are really no side effects to report at this point in time. Most people complain about protein powders giving embarrassing flatulence or at the worst bad taste. In my research, I’ve come across none of that. This is due potentially to the inclusion of their proprietary and patented enzyme blend ProHydrolase.

Whey protein powder is considered to be the best protein for bodybuilders and fitness folk, and is widely considered to be very safe. Protein powder has been sold for 50 years and is a safe supplement.

How Much Should You Expect to Pay?

The price range for the various size options for the protein powder in the marketplace are:

  • 2.15 pounds — $24.69 to $35.99
  • 4.98 pounds — $52.99 to $87.00

BPI Sports guarantees all their products, but like most companies will defer to the retailer from guarantee2whom you buy it from provided it’s not a serious product failing. That’s one of the reasons why I endorse Amazon as 1) their prices are usually the cheapest on the Internet and 2) they have a great guarantee and are renowned for their customer service. You can read more about their guarantee here, if interested.

Receiving a sample packet from my last order from the BB store, I took this as a pre-workout meal replacement 30 minutes before hitting arms. The taste is clean and accurate to the flavor name. Tastes similar to that of Dymatize’s Elite Chocolate Mint, without the mint flavor, but similar texture and profile. I thoroughly enjoyed the product, and in fact plan on ordering a tub of WheyHD Chocolate Cookie or Vanilla Caramel when I get close to running out of my current whey.

I really liked the BPI pre-workout formula that is a combination fat burning and muscle building formula. So, I thought I’d try your Whey-HD-950-Chocolate Cookie 2.15-Pounds option. I really like it. It tastes great and doesn’t clump — even if one has to just stir it in.

Where Can I Buy It?

bpi whey hd proteinYou can buy it here, but you are free to choose. BPI says their protein product “raises the bar” but does it? Is is a quality product? It is a quality product, it tastes great and it certainly is usable, but to say it raises the bar is more of an advertising claim versus a real-world scientific leap forward for whey protein products. Due to its non-GMP compliance and average nutrient profile, I have to rate this a 4 out of 5. Not trying to sound harsh here. Again, it’s a really good product and I suspect it will get even better. Until then, though, there’s a little work to do. I hope this review of the BPI Whey HD protein powder product has been useful to you.
