Review of Douglas Labs QUELL Fish Oil

Douglas Labs is one of the most highly regarded supplement companies in the world. This review of their Quell Fish Oil supplement covers all aspects of the product including ingredients, nutritional profile, its health benefits and side effects and more.

Rating: 5 (out of 5)

Welcome to this review of the Douglas Labs Quell Omega-3 supplements. I say “supplements” for this review will go over all four fish oil supplement options offered by Douglas Laboratories headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. (The are all essentially the same with few differences, which differences and its benefits I will discuss later in this article.)

Fish oil supplements are among the most popular and used supplements in the world, and it’s not surprising considering the incredible range of health benefits they give. Plus, Omega-3 supplements are literally and probably the most clinically studied supplement in the world today also. Some of its benefits include increased cardiovascular health, lowering of bad LDL (low-density lipoproteins) cholesterol, improved mental function and many, many more.

That said, it seems like every supplement company on the company touts their product as the best one on the market today, but how can one tell? While it’s true that there is no such thing as a pharmaceutical grade quality fish oil, some companies produce better quality fish oil supplements. Douglas Laboratories says it does but do they? Well, that is what this review is all about.

Douglas Labs Quell Fish Oil Features & Benefits

If you’ve read other reviews on this website, you know I like to start the meat of the review discussing product quality and the quality control standards the supplement company adheres to.

Douglas Laboratories is one of the first supplement companies that adhered to cGMP (current Good Manufacturing Practices) before it was mandated into law. As you may know, supplement fraud used to be a real problem, which incurred the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to gmp-greeninvestigate various claims. It is beyond the scope of this article but they found massive fraud committed by various manufacturers. Thus, while it took 10 years for the legislation to pass, in 2006 the FDA began to phase in oversight for cGMP-compliance. It officially became law in 2009. That said, there is a quirky element of GMP compliance — the FDA doesn’t enforce it. The industry has been left to themselves to do it!

Some companies like Douglas Laboratories comply. Currently, there are three organizations that audit companies using a very strict checklist to ensure compliance. Here are a few of the organizations that can certify as GMP compliant.

  • NNFA (Nаtіоnаl Nutritional Food Aѕѕосіаtіоn)
  • NPA (Natural Products Association)
  • USP (United States Pharmacopeia)
  • NSF International (National Sanitation Foundation)
  • WHO (World Health Organization)

So, what does this have to do with the QÜELL Fish Oіl? All Douglas Laboratories products are made in cGMP-compliant facilities. The company adheres to very strict standards and it’s very evident in their Omega-3 product line. This fish oil is a very highly refined product made in Germany just for Douglas Laboratories.

What makes this fish oil unique? The company says that their fish oil “is unique among fish oils for its critical extraction, purity, bioavailaility and concentrations.”

Let’s first discuss “critical extraction.” One negative about fish oil is that the oils degrade or oxide very quickly. Douglas Laboratories is able to negate this with their “advanced technology” using an extraction method that they say uses less heat and no chemical solvents. Most fish oils manufacturers proudly state that their product is “molecularly distilled.” This is good, experts will tell you, as it extracts impurities including PCBs and toxins.

Douglas Laboratories is different as their extraction method results in “fewer unwanted isomer formations and ‘cleaner” oil.” Their fluid extraction uses CO2 (carbon dioxide) instead of oxygen to extract the targeted fatty acids that are so beneficial to humans. The company says an added benefit of using CO2 over oxygen is that is protects the final purified fish oil from having microorganisms that can’t survive without necessary oxygen.fish oil softgels

Moreover, Douglas Laboratories says their QUELL fish oil line is better absorbed citing scientific clinical data that shows triglyceride forms of fish oil is better absorbed by humans when compared to ethyl esters.

Another critical element that the company says sets their product above the competition is that their fish oil supplements provide 75% active ingredients when compared to the 30% or so of Omega-3 fatty acids of the competition.

So, essentially Douglas Laboratories says their fish oil pills are purer, more highly refined, deliver better bio-availability and a higher concentration of the fish oil fatty acids.

At the beginning of this review, I mentioned that there are four different Douglas Laboratories QUELL fish oil products, and instead of doing four separate reviews. Let’s now go into the common elements of the four products and they I’ll clearly cover the main differences. Currently, Douglas Laboratories offers these four different Omega-3 supplements:

  • QUELL Fish Oil EPA/DHA Plus D
  • QUELL FIsh Oil High EPA
  • QUELL Fish Oil High DHA
  • QUELL Fish Oil Junior

First, let’s discuss the common elements:

  • All the options above, except the Junior option, have 1.25 grams of total fat (Junior has .6 grams)
  • All the options above, except the Junior option, have 10 calories (Junior has 5 calories)
  • All have the same complementary additional ingredients, which are: Gelatin (capsule from fish Tilapia), glycerin (an anti-dessicant and sweetener), water, natural-source mixed tocopherols (organic compounds that have a high degree of vitamin E) and rosemary extract leaf (an herb used for culinary but also for medicinal purposes like helping poor digestion among others. This is probably its primary purpose in this formula)

Now, let’s talk about the differences option by option. Here are the nutritional profiles of each:

QUELL Fish Oil EPA/DHA Plus Ddouglas-labs-epa-dha-vit-d

  • 1,000 IU (international units) of Vitamin D3
  • 1,250 mg (milligrams) of Omega-3 triglyceride concentrate providing:
    • EPA (Eicosaphentaenoic Acid) — 500 mg
    • DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) — 400 mg

QUELL FIsh Oil High EPAdouglaslabs-epa

  • 1,250 mg (milligrams) of Omega-3 triglyceride concentrate providing:
    • EPA (Eicosaphentaenoic Acid) — 800 mg
    • DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) — 150 mg

QUELL Fish Oil High DHA

  • 1,250 mg (milligrams) of Omega-3 triglyceride concentrate providing:Douglas Labs QUELL Fish Oil
    • EPA (Eicosaphentaenoic Acid) — 200 mg
    • DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) — 775 mg

QUELL Fish Oil Junior

  • 625 mg (milligrams) of Omega-3 triglyceride concentrate providing:
    • EPA (Eicosaphentaenoic Acid) — 100 mgDouglas Laboratories Junior
    • DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid) — 387 mg

So, why the different versions? Aren’t they all the same basically? Yes and no. There are some distinct differences in the amounts of EPA, DHA and the Omega-3 triglyceride concentrate amounts.

As EPA, DHA and Vitamin D3 give unique therapeutic benefits, Douglas Laboratories wants to have a particular fish oil option for those who want to target specific health benefits native to EPA, DHA and Vitamin D.

Their QUELL Fish Oil EPA/DHA Plus D option is the most robust of the four and not surprisingly the most expensive. The QUELL Fish Oil Junior option is specifically for children. While a separate article is necessary to go over all the different health benefits of EPA and DHA, Douglas Laboratories offers those for those who want more of one over the other.

Briefly, clinical data continues to grow supporting EPA and DHA for cardiovascular health. (Heart disease is the #1 killer in the USA and UK.) To be precise, here are the core elements of DHA and EPA so you can get the option that you feel is the best for you.

DHA gives the following:

  • Plays a major role in the structural integrity of neuronal membranes
  • Supports joint health
  • Has strong anti-inflammation properties
  • Supports fetal brain growth and formation of the retina and visual cortex
  • High levels of DHA support memory and other neurological “parameters”

Vitamin D:

  • It is an essential vitamin for many important functions in the body
  • Plays a role in cardiovascular disease by “affecting inflammatory mediators
  • One thеоrу says Vіtаmіn D rеduсеѕ blооd рrеѕѕurе by decreasing thе production оf a hormone called rеnіn, whісh іѕ bеlіеvеd to рlау a role іn hуреrtеnѕіоn
  • The Journal of the American Medical Association in December 2003 said that 645 IU оf vitamin D a day along wіth more thаn 4 grams реr dау of cereal fiber had a 40% rеduсtіоn іn thеіr risk of dеvеlоріng рrесаnсеrоuѕ соlоn polyps. 40% reduction іn thеіr rіѕk оf dеvеlоріng рrесаnсеrоuѕ соlоn роlур
  • WebMD, in an article on Vitamin D, said, “A ѕtudу in thе Jan. 13, 2004 іѕѕuе оf Nеurоlоgу іndісаtеd that wоmеn whо gеt dоѕеѕ оf vіtаmіn D that аrе tурісаllу fоund іn dаіlу multіvіtаmіn ѕuррlеmеntѕ — of аt lеаѕt 400 international units — are 40% lеѕѕ lіkеlу to dеvеlор multірlе sclerosis соmраrеd with those nоt tаkіng over-the-counter ѕuррlеmеntѕ.

EPA:

  • Helps with all the elements that DHA does but Douglas Laboratories made a point of saying that “The Omega-3 fatty acid EPA is the direct precursor for the prostaglandins, which area involved in helping to maintain the body’s normal inflammatory processes.”

For those aging, inflammation and soreness is something that is understood. EPA helps with that significantly.

fish oil supplementsWhich one is for you? The one that you can afford but also the one that perhaps has benefits that are more aligned with your current reality.

What about flavors? Well, the softgels that contain the ingredients of this supplement don’t have a flavor. They are easily ingested with water or any healthy liquid.

What about size options? There are two, the 30 softgel and 60 softgels option for the QUELL Fish Oil EPA/DHA Plus D option but not the others. The others only are offered at this point in time with the 60 softgel option. This 60 softgel amount of softgels will last you either a month if you take two a day or a month if you take one a day. (For the record, Douglas Laboratories recommends taking two a day.)

Side Effects of Douglas Labs Quell Fish Oil

This supplement has no negative side effects. When one first starts supplementing with an Omega-3 supplement, one will perhaps get the notorious “fish burps” until one has adapted to it. If one is persistent in taking the fish oil gels, it will be a quick burp that lasts perhaps two seconds but then is gone. This supplement is safe to ingest as it’s full of DHA and EPA and Omega-3s that the body can utilize for various health benefits. It is perfectly safe to use. Fish oil supplements overall are the most researched supplements in the world and are popular the world over.

Price

This product sells for a range of $37.00 USD to $69.99. Let me give the price range of all four options for the 60 softgel option and then the 30 softgel option:

The 30 softgel option price:

  • QUELL Fish Oil EPA/DHA Plus D, 30 softgels — $31.70

Guarantee

Douglas Laboratories offers a 30-day money back guarantee on products bought from their Product guaranteewebsite. I recommend buying from Amazon, though, as 1) they have a bullet-proof guarantee and 2) their customer service is legendary. They’ve won the ForeSee Experience Index award for best customer service for an unprecedented nine years in a row and 3) as many vendors compete head-to-head on Amazon, the customer gets the best price possible.

Douglas Labs Quell Fish Oil Customer Reviews

While Douglas Laboratories is a major player in the supplement industry, they are very careful how they market their products. Only recently did their products become available via Amazon as they used to only sell their products through your family doctor. As such, while their products are popular, there are not that many testimonials. On Amazon, as of this writing, there is only seven. I also found other testimonials during my research of this product. Here are a few of them for your perusal.

Where Can I Buy It?

Douglas Labs QUELL Fish OilYou can buy it here, but you are free to choose. The Douglas Laboratories fish oil supplement products are among the very finest in the world and that is not an exaggeration. There are many reasons why. 1) They are made in GMP-compliant facilities, 2) they are highly distilled and come in diverse options for those who want more EPA or DHA or the addition of Vitamin D.

The only real negative is that the product is more expensive than any of the other fish oil products out there. I give this product a 5.00 out of 5.00. Yes, it’s that good. I hope this review of the Douglas Labs Quell fish oil Omega-3 supplement line has been helpful.
